0 313

While Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet starring Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor and produced by Vikramaditya Motwane got a rather low response during the first weekend of its release, the production of the movie is definitely appreciated by critics as well as the audience. With costumes being a vital element of this movie, Fashion Most Wanted explores the style quotient, frame by frame, and not one outfit failed to be steal-worthy.

Bombay Velvet Movie Review
Bombay Velvet

Costume designer Niharika Khan is the mind responsible for the elaborate, vintage outfits that perfectly fit with the era of the 50s and 60s. Anushka’s stage costumes are dramatic and over-the-top, while she appears in a no-fuss avatar during alone moments at home. Ranbir Kapoor on the other hand, is all suited up with his style progressing with his status as he tries to blend in with the top-notch class.

Let’s understand each character of Bombay Velvet better by decoding their style statements.

Anushka Sharma‘s retro look

Rosie Noronha (Anushka) vacillates between playing a gorgeous diva and a simply-clad girl. While on stage, she is dressed in dramatic stage outfits with cabaret being a huge hit in the 60s.

The ensembles Helen grooved in an era long gone, the cabaret look was if at all, a role-playing choice. However, Anushka made everything look real-time, and not a fancy dress competition.

Shimmer Outfits

Long gowns with exaggerated trails, elaborate feathers, head gears, and red roses were predominant in the movie. Shimmer was almost an inseparable part of Anushka’s stage ensembles. Big earrings, winged eyeliner, bouffant hairstyle, and cloth headbands shouted the sixties vividly.

When off the spotlight, the lass wore simple dresses featuring popular vintage print patterns such as plaid, polka, and floral. Head scarves, white framed sunnies, hand gloves, and hats added a gorgeous and elegant vibe to the retro attires.

What is the doable element? Sunnies, sheath dresses, and high-waist bikinis!

Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar style

While Johny (Ranbir) is trying to fit in the rich, English-speaking class of businessmen, he ensures he dresses like one. Three-piece, double-breasted suits in shades of brown, blue, and grey along with white dominated over black. Everybody wore sunglasses in the movie and so did Johny.

Ranbir Kapoor

Bow ties, ties, and brooches looked fabulously classy. While one can adapt the bow-ties and brooches, I would suggest stay clear of the few corduroy suits seen in the movie.

Khambata (Karan Johar) a capitalist is seen in suits and often wears silk scarves with them as well as pocket squares and brooches. Printed shirts with solid suiting exude the vibe of a sharp businessman, making Karan Johar look true to his character. Take a cue on getting your stock of pocket squares and brooches, I have a feeling they’re gonna be loved!
