Red Carpet Runway

The Cannes Film Festival really should be more about the movies than about how people turn out. It really should”¦ But it’s the world’s most beautiful people, dressed in fashion’s biggest labels and poised to outdo each other. We couldn’t help but bring you this special on the glam brigade’s clothes and accessories.

DESI DIVAS

Sherlyn Chopra

Okay, Sherlyn, everybody already knows you’re a playboy model. And we know you’ve got a fabulous body. But must you really advertise your job to such an obnoxious extent? Ladies, when we say sheer, this is how daring you must NOT be. Sherlyn Chopra’s full-sleeved black number left little to the imagination; a sheer disaster.

Sonam Kapoor

Everything she wore, from a white skirt-suit, to the sheer, lacy black on silver gown and her gold and cream sari, made us think that Sonam Kapoor was born with a red carpet sense of style. This Dolce & Gabbana dress was particularly interesting ““ the wide skirt is so grand, the tube-bodice shows off her slim waist and well, while we saw a host of large prints on other ladies at Cannes, this is perhaps the best-looking.

Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan - Sabyasachi
Vidya Balan – Sabyasachi

Rumour has it that she was on a flight to Rajasthan but somehow ended up in France. Other stories say she was shooting a marriage scene and they packed her off to the Cannes Film Festival leaving her no time to change. What happened here? The Sabyasachi outfits are to-die-for but the entire look was a terrible mismatch with the event. Hair let down and dupatta worn as “¦.well a dupatta”¦. rather than this veiled look could have let her various ensembles shine. We’ll give her a few points for the cream bordered sari and its brown blouse with shoulder-detail.

Aishwarya Rai

Well ““ the pregnancy pounds are still showing ““ but Aishwarya Rai dazzled anyway. Her big black dresses have seen lots of attention and fortunately this time around it also included applause. We thought she also deserves a pat on the back for this demure, timeless Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla gown; western in its silhouette but ethnic in its print.

Frieda Pinto

She’s managed the perfect red carpet look. This slinky Sanchita Ajjampur number, with its thigh high slit, cinched at the waist and its sheer intonations is made perfect with her box-clutch, sky-high stilettos, side-swept up-do and bright red lips.

FABOULOUS
Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria - Versace

Despite the wardrobe malfunction, you have to agree that Eva Longoria ““ before the rain came along and caused unwanted exposure ““ looked picture perfect in her pale blue Versace gown. The snake-skin-esque print, sheer-looking fabric, broad waistband, and bare shoulder are so sensual. If only she had let our imagination run wild instead of leaving nothing to it.

Eva Longoria - Zuhair Murad

Given all the bad attention, let’s also applaud her for her sheer nude-gold Zuhair Murad gown.

Jessica Chastain

The Zero Dark Thirty actress wowed everybody at the screening of Cleopatra (1963) in this white Versace gown. She brought on the bling with Elizabeth Taylor’s trademark sautoir. Her hair and the gown’s trail, which is reminiscent of Egypt came together beautifully.

Petra Nemcova

Petra Nemcova - Emilio Pucci
Petra Nemcova – Emilio Pucci

You can hardly go wrong when you’ve got a body that perfect. Petra Nemcova was a vision in Emilio Pucci’s fishtail dress that brought together sheer fabric and glitter with panache. Given the heavy embellishment, she did right in keeping her accessories to the minimum.

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue -Roberto Cavalli

Does she ever disappoint? Kylie Minogue’s figure hugging Roberto Cavalli dress showed off her still-perfect curves. The delicate trail and embroidery came together perfectly. We just wish she’d done something interesting with her hair or her jewellery.

Jessica Beil

Ah, here’s a lovely 20’s inspired dress. Doesn’t it remind you of Daisy Carraway in The Great Gatsby?  The serpent neck piece gives the whole silvery grey palette some oomph value, while her nude pumps, silver clutch and simple hairdo bring it all together with sophistication. Plus she’s got that delicious-looking arm candy!

Jane Fonda

She should write a book on how to look sexy in your seventies! The 75-year old was picture perfect in both a bright blue Versace gown and this off-shoulder pink number.  The heavy-duty neckpiece brings in all the red carpet glamour a girl needs.

Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole - Zuhair Murad
Cheryl Cole – Zuhair Murad

The Parachut singer often gets it wrong. But this sheer, lacy wine dress is spot on ““ it is a beautiful contrast with her glowing golden complexion and accentuates her curves. Zuhair Murad works for you girl!

Emma Watson

Emma Watson - Chanel
Emma Watson – Chanel

This dress is just perfect for the young star with its glittery bodice combined with a narrow, linear silhouette and (this is adorable!) pockets on its front. The red carpet glamour emerges from the trail and barely-there fishtail.

Cara Delevingne

Carla Delvigne - Chopard Jewels
Carla Delvigne – Chopard Jewels

You see, Sherlyn, this is how you reveal and look sophisticated at the same time. Carla Delvigne’s black gown leaves little to the imagination with its sheer, lace back and waist-low neckline as far as the bodice goes ““ we like that the rest of it was nice and minimal. She makes it a class act with a Chopard necklace and earrings.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan - Vionnet
Carey Mulligan – Vionnet

Her look in The Great Gatsby made ripples in fashion circles and with the 20s revival, we would think she would have a near-perfect look at Cannes. But in the film’s photo op, a rather shapeless black gown, against her pale skin made her look washed out and boring. However, she looked gorgeous in an ivory satin gown by Dior; the red lips gave her look some much-needed colour. Also, this Vionnet gown is to die for ““ love the monochrome, the slits are risqué and super-sexy and the neckline detail gives it edge ““ but unfortunately it hangs on Carrey Mulligan. We’ll give her points for wearing the perfect shoes and getting her hair perfect. The ensemble also cries out for some earrings.

Mila Jovovich

Milla Jovovich - Chanel
Milla Jovovich – Chanel

This Chanel dress does nothing for the model-turned-actress. She looks like she draped a bedspread over a white (college-goer’s) tee! Can’t help but think that she might have been able to salvage her look with a shape-giving obi belt, a red clutch and some statement jewellery.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman

Until now, it seemed impossible for this timeless beauty to ever need a style check. But this dress just doesn’t match Nicole Kidman’s otherwise breathtaking red carpet looks. The silhouette is flattering and the trail is just right; the hair and make-up is classic Kidman. Its just the print that fails to do her justice.

Paz Vega

Is this a wardrobe malfunction or is it meant to look like her skirt fell off?
