PCJ Delhi Couture Week: Review of day 1

One of the most awaited fashion weeks of the year PCJ Delhi Couture Week kicked off with panache at the Taj Palace hotel in Delhi with veteran designers Anju Modi and Sabyasachi Mukherjee showcasing their respective collections.

Anju Modi’s show was all about grandeur and royalty. Her collection was inspired by Draupadi, the queen of the five Pandavas in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. But here is the twist, Modi interestingly uses her creativity and imagination and presented a warrior Draupadi.

The collection comprised warrior style blouses, which somewhat reminded me of Rani Lakshmi Bai. With voluminous ghaghras, duppatas draped in an eccentric style, chunky earrings and bold makeup, the show made for a perfect story. Ever so graceful actress Tabu walked the ramp for the designer.

With a loyal clientele like Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan, Sabyasachi’s name is big enough and, fortunately, he never lets you down. Sabyasachi’s collection Opium was a rare eclectic mix of simplicity and glitz.

At one side where he uses khadi that symbolizes simplicity, on the other, he impresses with his intricate sequined detailing that adds that ‘oomph’ factor to the collection. Usually the one to go for black as the base palette for his collections, it was refreshing to see him move to a more subtle palette of nudes and creams. Trademark of Sabyasachi, the full sleeve backless blouses worn with beautiful sarees cut a really pretty picture for the audience. Looking at the smoky eye makeup and heavy jewellery, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Chanel’s India inspired pre-fall collection of 2011. I just had a minor glitch. After looking at some really great pieces, it all started to look a bit repetitive after a point. Having said that, I was happy by the end of the show as this one did total justice to my expectations.
