Jackie Kennedy’s Style

60’s fashion is the talk of the town and we’d say that it’s definitely worth the hype. It was an era of transition from uncomfortable dressing to dressing for comfort. While women till the 50’s dressed for their men, always looking achingly sweet and feminine-in the 60’s women chose ease of movement, classic cuts and simple silhouettes over dressing for their male counterparts. If anyone, it has to be Jackie Kennedy who played a major role in this transition. She was not only John F Kennedy’s better half and a political figure but also a fashion icon of every American woman. Since, we have been embracing 60’s fashion again, FMW decodes the style of the trend setter herself.

1) Shift and Sheath:

Her style was known for its simplicity and elegance. She preferred neat silhouettes and tailored cuts. She promised loyalty to sleeveless shift dresses as well as sheath dresses with defined waistlines usually adorned by a center bow. The color palette remained soft with pastel shades of pink, blue and yellow.

2) Boxy skirt suits:

The 60’s popularised skirt suits and Jackie liked hers to be boxy. Chanel vouched for boxy suits and Jackie spread the word to America. She was extremely fond of French fashion and followed it religiously. Chanel’s boxy skirt suits spread like wild fire in America after its First Woman made them her staple.

3) Bouffant:

It is not a hairstyle to get erased with the passage of time. It adds volume to your crown and flatters your face. Women are bound to stick to it as long as forever. It will be revived intermittently, undoubtedly. But then again, it was Jackie who showed us that a bouffant could look so gorgeous. It was Jackie’s signature- a back combed, teased bouffant.

4) Pearls:

Can we ever forget the three layered pearl necklace? It seemed like she loved and married her pearls. Nobody had ever made pearls look so elegant, the consequence- women in the 60’s couldnt get enough of them but so can’t we!

5) Oversized Sunglasses:

While women in the 50’s wore small, cat eye sunglasses, Jackie liked hers to be big and round. Big sunnies became symbolic with the 60’s and she wore them everywhere- with her pillbox hat or a scarf or just with those rose hued lips.

Speaking of pillbox hats, they topped her list of signatures though we wouldn’t see many women following that trend today.

Go ahead dress up like Jackie Kennedy and don’t forget to send us your pictures. We’d love to see! xx
