Runway Review at Lakme Fashion Week Day 1

1 24

Into the premiere day of Lakme Fashion Week and it already seemed young with all the new talent as INIFD presented their batch of gen next. While Chandni Mohan went the Coco Chanel with her boxy dresses and jackets, Divya Seth inspired by the English tea party exhibited a set of porcelain looking blue-and-white ensembles.

The next show took us back to a black-and-white movie as Dhruv Kapur presented a set of monochromatic ensembles. Duality played a major role as one would wonder whether it’s a tuxedo or a bomber; a jumpsuit with a coat back or another with a trail. A minimalist collection, he skipped embroidery and all that jazz to keep focus on cuts and construction.

Pranav Mishra and Shyma Shetty’s label Huemn with a collection we absolutely loved. An amalgamation of sports luxe, laid back dressing and ultra fashion, it was athleticism at it’s best. Numerical motifs, silk sweatshirts over sequinned pencil skirts, varsity tees added vibrant energy to the collection.

Digvijay Singh took us down the lanes of nostalgia with a collection inspired from ludo and snakes & ladders. The color palette remained more of Indian with white, beige and khaki however he westernized it with a few splashes of red, blue, green and yellow.

Fashion is not to be tamed, believes Nikhil Thampi as he presented his “Untamed” collection. We liked the zipper detailing and metallic roses, but overall the collection didn’t stand out. Shorts and bralet is nothing innovative and more often the gowns seemed like a piece of cloth wrapped around, stitched hurriedly with some embellishments thrown in to create an optical illusion of evening wear.

Nishka Lulla, on the other hand impressed with pale pastels. Jumpsuits, matching separates, translucent tops over bralets- the collection seemed refreshing and young without appearing boisterous.

We know fashion is art and Sounia Gohil went ahead to craft her outfits inspired from art and architecture of European Renaissance. She played with sheer and solid in shades of icy blue, lilac and pistachio green. Midi skirts as well as minis with sheer overskirt looked exuded womanly charm of a very beautiful era.

Art also played a major role in Narendra Kumar’s collection as he seemed to be inspired from the artist Franz Kline. Sharply cut jumpsuits, gowns, peplums with a distinct Japanese feel to it sizzled on the ramp each outfit revolving around the feelings of happiness, attachment, obsession and violence. More a statement of fashion, the ensembles seemed to be modes of expression.
