Pantone color of the year |Insignificant to Indian Fashion

Early this month we covered an article on the Pantone color 2021. Many social media enthusiasts in India immediately began to share their styled looks in neutral ultimate gray and vibrant yellow Illuminating. Which was declared by the the global color authority ‘Pantone‘ as the hues of 2021 globally.

But, if you had a deeper sense about Indian fashion. One could immediately tell that these colors may not really be flattering for the Indian skin tone. To dive deeper into our curiosity and to understand how would Indian designers adopt these two colors in their designs. We spoke to veteran Indian fashion designer James Ferreira to put things into perspective.

James Ferreira talks about the Pantone Colors of 2021

James Ferreira was a pioneer in the Indian fashion industry and has collaborated with all major players that shaped the Fashion, Textile and media business in the formative years. His design philosophy is recognizable in his flowing garments; from a weave to a drape, to a cut, and finally a silhouette, which remains nothing but one single piece of cloth.

He is considered a master draper whose garments in predominantly natural fabrics. He truly epitomizes the seamlessly unique blend of western silhouettes with Indian crafts and technique. He then went on to work with a host of reputed textile houses, boutiques and private clients. He worked as a designer under the iconic British Designer Zandra Rhodes in 1982. Before he launched his label ‘James Ferreira’ in 1992.

Talking about the Pantone color 2021 James tells us that he strongly believes that Pantone color don’t really work for the Indian domestic retail market. But for export, yes. He goes on to say that the Indian fashion industry is disorganized. There is no connect between the textile manufacturers and fashion industry. We do not even have an Indian size chart for God sake.

Adding his thoughts on the Pantone color 2021 i.e. neutral Ultimate Gray and vibrant yellow Illuminating he says “Grey is horrific against most Indian skins. Looks great on fair girls and guys. As for the Yellow, I prefer a warmer tone. Pantone color is set for the western market of predominantly white skins so they are not suitable for Indian skin color tone.”
