Hair Care Tips By Expert Marcus Francis
I love Los Angeles. It reinvents itself every two days -Billy Connolly
The city of Los Angeles is forever changing, and it’s changing lives of those who happen to land on it. TRESemmé’s Global Stylist, Marcus Francis moved to LA in 1999 from Seattle, Washington. It was then he realised, his passion for hair styling knew no bounds. His journey took an interesting turn when he took to television as a style expert on the show, “Style her famous.” He looks back on his journey, “I started off in 2001 and till then I never knew anything about a salon and what one can achieve being associated to a salon. When I started off styling celebrities, red carpets, fashion week’s hair styling and became more familiar with the work, I knew this is what I would want to do. My philosophy was to go hand in hand with my career and grab all the opportunities that come by.”
Marcus has styled the tresses of celebrities such as Salma Hayek, Natalie Portman, Kirsten Dunst, Kerry Washington, and Marisa Tomei to name a few for events like the Cannes Film Festival and Academy Awards. So who has been the most delightful celebrity to work with? Marcus gives a straight-forward answer, “Julianne Moore, Scarlette Johansonn are some of the celebrity who I have styled in the past and have had a wonderful experience. Especially Julianne Moore, she has such wonderful stunning hair and she lets you do your job. You can style her the way you want and she will carry it well. She is absolutely stunning.
Marcus has also done many editorials. He had worked with Vogue and W, right in the initial days of his career graph in NYC. Recently, he styled for InStyle Magazine. He gives us the inside story about the look, “The look that we did for Instyle was a rain themed shoot. We actually created fake rain to create that wet look when you are drenched. It was actually about keeping a nice leave in conditioner and crunchiness in the hair so you can get a moist, shiny look and a natural touch.” We say a writer is a writer and can write about anything, any genre, anywhere. Marcus proved that styling is no different. From being a style expert on TV to giving makeovers, from editorial shoots to red carpet looks- he does it all. Marcus agrees, “I think the Cannes festival was by far the most challenging. You have one chance to make the hair look great, as supposed to editorial where you are in a studio with everything around you. Red carpet at Cannes is just one chance and everyone is different and holds a different opinion.”
A good hair style can transform one’s look, and the world realises that. Hence, hair experts believe one must have hair that is healthy and manageable. Talking about hair revolutions, Marcus agrees, “Major hair revolutions I guess is the accessibility to get smoother silkier hair as compared to frizzy and coarse hair. Every woman loves smoother, bouncier hair which can be flipped from one side to other.” He adds, “I think 3 must have products are a great shampoo and conditioner, climate control shampoo and conditioner. TRESemmé has a great range of climate control shampoo and conditioner that can help one protect hair and helps get a better lasting hairstyle than any other shampoo. Another must have product I think is dry shampoo. You know how oily your hair gets at times or how flat it can get at times, dry shampoo gives you a one stop remedy no matter where you are and also gives a shiny feel to your hair. A third product is a great wide tooth comb. It evenly distributes the shampoo and conditioner in your hair and prevents hair fall.
The curious mind wonders if having good hair texture is enough- what if I have amazing hair but I color it in a shade that would make me look like an accidental mixed breed. Marcus comes to rescue and tells us the technicalities, “For Indian olive skin tone warm colours suit the best as compared to cool colours. Having more warm and rich hair tones towards the ends so that the healthiness of your hair and scalp can be maintained and the colour does not need to be touched up very often.”
But being whacky, is not always bad. If you can carry off an eccentric look it is better than anything else. Marcus tells us his favourite whacky-do that he came across, “New York, May 2013, Blake Lively who is known for her lovely hair wore a ponytail which was like a bubble. It was long and had elastic throughout and she made it look so desirable and appropriate. It was a long extended ponytail but with bubbles all through done by elastic.”
But if you want to play safe and stick to the major hair trend of the season, Marcus says one can never go wrong with a faux bob! It is super sexy and FMW is thinking of coming up with a tutorial for creating a faux bob. Let us know if you would like that.
We feel guilty of indulging in the immense ocean of knowledge about hair care and styling endowed upon us by this style expert. Wouldn’t we love to have him style women from our homeland, India? He would love that too, “Yes, I wish to do so. I wish to style Priyanka Chopra and looking forward to it.”
Last but not the least, All good for speaking long term but we often find our beautiful tresses hidden in the misfortune of BAD HAIR DAYS. Marcus Francis solves this puzzling situation of our lives too, “Wearing your hair into a ponytail or bun. It helps to draw attention to your face instead of your bad hair day. Not only is this a quick and easy fix, but it can be a sleek and sexy style if done right! You can also accessorize your hair with a headband as they can be a great savior. Headbands can help take attention away from the state of your hair, as well as help control any loose frizz by holding it into place. And lastly using a dry shampoo. It removes excess oil and buildup from scalp leaving your hair look refreshed and no one will have to know you skipped your morning wash.”
I go outside, and I’m wearing a funky T-shirt and my hair is dirty, and people say, ‘What’s wrong with her? She needs to invest in a airbrush,” says Kristen Stewart
