Karl Lagerfeld once said, “I love to watch times change.” He sure proved it by taking us back in the year 1913 through his short film, Once Upon A Time. Starring the British superstar, Keira Knightley as Coco Chanel and various other supermodels in cameo roles, the movie was premiered yesterday in Singapore, marking the 100 years of Chanel in existence.

There is a reason why Karl is known as a perfectionist and why, even after 100 years, Chanel continues to be a class apart. The movie shows the early days of struggle of Gabrielle Coco’ Chanel and her vision for fashion.

The opening scene shows a duo of local maids mocking Coco’s taste in fashion as she came up with her own version of minimalistic hats. In just 18 minutes, Karl manages to show us Coco’s struggle with her hat boutique to them eventually becoming a rage. Coco’s vision for futuristic designs and an eye for trends is depicted very well in a scene where Coco appreciates a masculine jacket on a customer and decides to make something similar.

Besides Keira, supermodels Lindsey Wixon, Stella Tennant and actor Amanda Harlech are a complete delight to watch.

The film proves that Karl Lagerfeld is a man of many talents and he sure knows perfectionism. If you are a Chanel, there is no reason you shouldn’t treat yourself to this 18-minute saga that gives you a peek into Gabrielle Coco Chanel’s world.
