Monochrome was the theme of the recently concluded grand finale at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012. Monochrome is a look that reflects the colour blocking trend in fashion, and channels attention to one part of the face to maximize the impact of make-up. Monochromatic color schemes may be considered boring unless there is diversity within the design. And both the Finale designers didn’t disappoint. The audience marveled at the constructing skills of Kallol and international award winning designers Pankaj and Nidhi for their very avant garde creativity. Inspired by black and white of the Lakmé Absolute Monochrome range, with a hint of colours, the intricately crafted garments told a wonderful story of unconventional elegance.

This got me thinking weather has black and white made a vehement comeback to our wardrobes! Well for me, they never left. Colorful spring-summer skies make way for somber autumn-winter. So now it is time for FMW to guide you to get your winter wardrobe ready!

All White shirts

  • Casual– Wear it to college or a coffee shop. Could have front pockets and buttoned roll up sleeves. Team with a pair of faded denims or cropped pants. Add a dash of pop colors in the form of belts, scarves, footwear, oversized hobos or a signature neckpiece. A definite head turner.
  • Crisp White ““ Wear it to meetings and an official outing shirt. Perfect fit, ideally cotton-lycrablend with minimum ado. Team it with well -fitted pencil skirt or high waisted trousers. Add a slim belt, kitten heels or peep toes.Checked or striped scarf or a string of pearls and you will dictate serious business.
  • Fancy white– Wear it to evenings out or dinners. Think satin, crepe, chiffon, with frills, peasant or ballooned up sleeves. Pair with evening-wear skinny or harem pants, leather pants or high end denims. Add a little glitter with sequined belts or head-bands, evening clutches or a pair of stilettos. All set to be the diva of the evening.

Maxis are making a vehement comeback too this season.  Flowing silhouettes, with interesting cuts make for a great vision. Monochromatic printed maxis are a great option for day and night -wear. Eccentric prints are all over the place, wackier the better. Conservatives may opt for Polka Dots, Paisley Prints or Aztec Prints with a dash of yellow or red to it. Team it with gold accessories. Think chunky gold hand cuff or gold metallic belt to add spice.

Be bold, opt for yellow or tan brogues (in trend and look super cool, be careful to pick the right pair).

Androgyny has been the fashion flavor for quite some time now. Monochromes define androgynous the best. Think chic suits, well -fitted blazers, pencil thin pants and striking waist coats. Make it absolutely no non-sense. Team with a great pair of heels. Carry the look to office or night -time dos with equal elan.

Rock it with the Saree

Black and White printed, striped or shaded Sarees look minimalistic yet classy. Again think eccentric prints like wheels, charkhas, birds, daggers or even monuments like Eiffel Tower.Flowing fabrics teamed with boldly cut halter or tube blouses will make heads turn. Try a messed up braid or hair rolled into a neat chignon and bold red lips to go with it.

 Short it up

High -Waist chequered or pin-striped shorts in black and white combined with a snugly fit crisp white or black shirt. Generate some drama with a pair of suspenders. Or a well fitted short skirt with interesting top. Layer it up with cardigans or jackets. Try teaming with a pair of pop colored leggings or stockings. Complete the look with monochromatic brogues- they are in trend and make a cool fashion statement!

Trench Coats

Trench Coats in black or white checks or solid colors make for classy autumn winter wear. Trust your Burberry to never go out of fashion. Pair with interesting pair of boots. You are ready for the chills.

Little Black Dress

The importance of your LBD can never be stressed enough. It can take you from casual to chic and back. Fit is important. Bandage dresses have also come to stay. Think Herve Leger with a glamorous pair of shoes. Way out of your pocket? Bebe does good bandage dresses too. Your curves don’t agree with a bandage dress ?

Go with a shift dress or a wrap dress. The black dresses by Victoria Beckham spell so much elegance. Even Salvatore Ferragamo’shoundstooth dress in black and white is a classic. Similar versions can be sought from high street brands.

Seek signature neck pieces or clutches to go with it.

Styling tip

When sporting the black and white look, keep the make up minimal and nude. To go bold add a dash of color to either only eyes or only lips. Try no fuss hair styling too. Tie up the hair to give the look a neat finish.

While accessorizing, try to stick to one statement piece. Though I would recommend minimum or no accessories.
